About the course
The 8th Course in Tropical Dermatology of the DDG and ISDT took place under the title “Connecting Experiences in Tropical Dermatology” in Salvador da Bahia — the society’s first international tropical dermatology event after the pandemic-related enforced break. The setting was Salvador, one of the oldest cities in Brazil, with the historic old town of Pelourinho and its rich Afro-Brazilian culture.
The hosts were two closely cooperating institutions: the Hospital Universitário Professor Edgard Santos (HUPES) and the Instituto Couto Maia (ICM). The departments of immunology and tropical dermatology at HUPES, led by Prof. Paulo Machado, are reference centres for dermatological diseases in the 15-million-inhabitant state of Bahia and lead clinical studies on tropical dermatological diseases worldwide. The ICM is among the largest tropical clinics in Brazil and, with specialised consultations and several wards, covers the complete spectrum of South American tropical medicine and infectiology.

The faculty came from three continents. From Brazil, speakers from HUPES and ICM in Salvador (among others Paulo Machado, Edgard and Lucas Carvalho, Maria de Fátima Oliveira, Aurea Angélica Paste, Cristina Archanjo), the Alfredo da Matta Foundation in Manaus (Sinesio and Carolina Talhari) as well as from Porto Alegre (Mauro Ramos) took part. Programme highlights
The programme placed a clear emphasis on cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil and the Old World, leprosy, HIV/AIDS, echinococcosis, mpox, syphilis, granulomatous skin diseases, teledermatology, HTLV-1, deep mycoses, viral diseases and tropical dermatology consultations. An optional visit led to Corte de Pedra, an endemic region for American tegumentary leishmaniasis.
