Review

The 6th overseas course in tropical dermatology of the ISDT took place from 25 to 30 October 2018 in Phnom Penh. Under the title “Sharing Dermatological and Cultural Diversity”, the course combined an introduction to medicine and dermatology in Cambodia, an international congress, patient presentations at the Preah Kossamak Hospital, a visit to the Khien Khleang leprosy clinic and a shortened DDA-certified advanced seminar.

The international congress addressed paediatric dermatology in Cambodia, the epidemiology of dermatological diseases, scabies in Cambodian monasteries, parasitic diseases, snake bites in Southeast Asia, tropical viral infections, xeroderma pigmentosum in Africa, the consequences of betel nut and nicotine on the oral mucosa, schistosomiasis, anogenital HPV infections, haemorrhoidal disease and a large-scale tinea corporis epidemic in India caused by the misuse of clobetasol- containing topical preparations.

Clinical sessions

A highlight was the presentation of 13 selected patients at the university dermatology clinic in the Preah Kossamak Hospital. The cases were examined in small groups and subsequently presented in the seminar room. Among others, Barth syndrome, ashy dermatosis, lupus panniculitis, morphea, congenital erythropoietic porphyria, lepromatous leprosy and LEOPARD syndrome were featured.

Leprosy and advanced seminar

At the Khien Khleang leprosy clinic, the national leprosy programme, patients with sequelae of previous leprosy as well as those affected by severe leprosy reactions were presented. On the last day of the course, a DDA advanced seminar followed on cutaneous leishmaniasis, bacterial tropical dermatoses, pediculosis capitis, filariases, toxic events in water, tropical mycoses and experiences from Manaus.
