Review

The 5th annual meeting of the Society for Dermatology in the Tropics took place together with the 5th Symposium on Tropical Dermatology and Travel Medicine in the lecture hall of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. The report mentions more than 140 participants and 17 speakers.

A first focus was leishmaniasis: immunology, the occurrence of sandflies in Europe, diagnostics, clinical presentations and therapy were presented. Further contributions addressed tinea profunda, the albinism programme of the Regional Dermatology Training Centre in Moshi, custom sunscreens for people with albinism and xeroderma pigmentosum, toxic marine contacts as well as practical experience from dermatological missions in Central and South America, Africa and Cambodia.

Clinical impressions

The report particularly highlights the contributions from Moshi/Tanzania: people with albinism are more frequently affected in the Kilimanjaro region and require consistent sun protection in order to prevent life-threatening sun damage and tumours. Further clinical experience reports came from medical officers of the Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Hamburg and from an ISDT scholarship holder who worked in Phnom Penh.
